Self Defense lessons from a coyote vs. moose (surprise end & pics)

IMG_2775I want to show you a couple of pictures that I took the other day when I was trail running.  I’ve got kids and have changed diapers and am immune to “gross” and don’t think there’s anything wrong with what I’m about to show you, but here’s a fair warning that you might not want to read this if you’re currently eating milk duds:

What they show is the ultimate in disrespect…a 40 pound coyote pooping on a pile of scat (poop) from a 1000 pound moose.

Did you think, “How could the coyote DARE to “talk” to a bigger, tougher, stronger moose like that?”

IMG_2776Or, “What an arrogant little coyote.”

What I see is a tangible display of deep seated confidence.  Not chest-pounding bluster, but earned confidence, as you’ll see.

That’s because the coyote knew, at the core of her being, that she could take care of business with her bare hands (paws), if she needed to.  She knew that the strength, size, and bluster of the moose was no match for a few well placed and fully committed strikes.

In fact, here’s how this story played out recently for one moose…in between 2 of the piles of scat I pictured above.

IMG_2774

The 40 pound coyote (and I’m sure a few of her friends joined in) had the 1000 pound moose for dinner…despite the 25X difference in size and strength.

There are some excellent lessons here that I want to share with you:

  1. What works on bad people doesn’t necessarily work on EVIL people. In this case, coyotes don’t usually attack larger moose.  They’ll attack calves and 200-400 pound youths, but not larger moose.  “Usually” they attack the weak and the size, strength, attitude, and intimidation of a larger moose prevents attacks from starting in the first place.

“Usually” moose are able to fend off coyote with their size, strength, and snorting. But every once and awhile, you get a “honey badger” or 1%er coyote who just doesn’t care about size, strength, intimidation, or bluster, and goes for the jugular.

When that happens, and the moose quickly cycles through the tools that have worked in the past (snorting, rushing, & kicking) and find themselves at a complete loss if they don’t work.  The same is true for people. Most people (good or bad) turn and run at the first sign of a fight.

Many bad guys will run away when their intended victim starts to resist.

You hear stories about grandmas stopping muggings by verbally scolding and swinging their purse at their attacker.

Unfortunately, victories against “mild” attackers like these give people a false sense of security and a false sense of what really works.  ANY attack or technique works on low-grade attackers.  Attackers who turn and run at the first sign of resistance or a couple of hits aren’t “evil” and you don’t need to worry about them.

The ones you need to prepare for are the 1%ers who see you as a pawn in their game of life and who are calm and comfortable about using violence on you to get what they want.

These are the guys who make up a big chunk of the prison population.  They’re the guys with “1%” patches on their motorcycle vests.  They’re guys who smile when punched in the face and respond to verbal judo with a Bowie knife.  In many cases, they’re wired VERY differently than you.  Calm rational arguments may work well with well adjusted people, but fall on deaf ears with a 1%er.

You can’t negotiate with a 1%er.  You can’t even really defend against a 1%er in the traditional sense of blocking and punching.  Your only real option is to attack them in such a way that you shut down their mind/body’s ability to hurt you as quickly and efficiently as possible.

  2. Most martial arts & self-defense programs create moose. That’s not all bad.  Some martial arts programs are focused on leadership and discipline for kids.  I don’t think kids need to learn about true violence any sooner than necessary, so I’m good with this.

Some martial arts programs are focused on sport, fitness, and self-confidence (like many military martial arts programs).  And the lessons learned in these classes are incredibly valuable and will work in some self-defense situations.  They work on “moose” and it’s quite fun to watch 2 “moose” fight each other on UFC fights.

But when a 1%er who’s comfortable with violence attacks you, it’s a different story.  Intent, skill, and targeting will beat speed, strength, and endurance every time. This is a big deal.  Good American kids died in the sandbox because they were trying to “win” and “submit” their opponent when their opponent was trying to kill them and you don’t want to make the same mistake.

  3. A mamma bear attitude without fangs, claws, and intent makes you a moose. Don’t get me wrong.  I LOVE it when I see mom’s switch into mamma bear mode on bullies.  It solves a lot of low intensity social problems very quickly.  But if that’s the highest gear you’ve got, you’re not going to be able to keep up with a 1%er.

BUT, a petite mama bear or even grandmama bear has enough strength to take out the most violent attacker in seconds…if they know what to target and how to “flip the switch” mentally and attack the correct targets with body weight and fierce intensity.

  4. Violence is rarely the answer, but when it is, it’s the ONLY answer. In this case, the moose simply didn’t have the tools to deal with the situation.  Violence was the answer…the only answer, and the moose didn’t know the answer.

I don’t want you OR your loved ones to ever be in that situation…where you don’t have a higher gear to shift into.  Where you’ve tried all of the tools that you know and don’t know what to do next.  I want you to have the earned confidence of the coyote, the skills to back it up, and the peace of mind that goes with it.

And it’s easier and less expensive than you probably thought possible.

The short, simple answer when faced with true violence is strike the groin, throat, and eyes until the threat is no longer a threat–that part’s easy.

The full answer isn’t just about what to hit and how to hit it, but how to be able to immediately “flip the switch” from being the kind, compassionate person who you are to being able to do what’s necessary to critically injure an attacker and stop them from being able to hurt you or a loved one.

You need to be able to do this instantly, without any hesitation or doubt, and this is where almost every “system” falls short.

Fortunately, you can learn about the only system I’ve ever found that gives you the tools to do just that by going >HERE<.  It’s the system my wife and I use, that I got for my parents, and that I helped teach some of Glenn Beck’s staff in their studios.  It was originally developed for the Navy SEALs and is used by several dozen military, government, and law enforcement tactical teams.

Want to know the best part?

If you act now, you can get it for less than 30 clams by going >HERE< now.  Don’t wait.  Do it now.

I’ve used and studied TFT materials for years; haven’t had the chance to attend a Live Training Yet, but the DVD’s and support books are invaluable for those who cannot make it to a Live Training. I am prepared to defend my Loved Ones! Thanks to all the TFT folks!

imho, Considering what is coming, total destruction of the USA (whore of Babylon) the most valuable skills imho are these.

    1) Learn God.

    2) Learn how to survive in the “deep woods” without power tools. God’s written word says those that survive the end time civil wars without harm flee to the “deep woods”. Do you have deep woods in a non-homosexual marriage state close to where you live?

    2) Head shots to instantly kill.

    3) Lung shots, avoiding the heart, so they go off and die somewhere else so you do not have to risk yourself getting rid of the body near your location.

    4) water and small farming skills.

Know this, Congress has been warned for years that God will not be mocked, including by their own stenographer. I literally sold the family 30 acre farm trying to prevent what is coming (before God showed me who the USA is). SOTH Boehner ignored my direct warnings, even to his twitter account that God was going to kill them for their mocking. But, whatever this evil socialist pope said to the SOTH, it caused him to resign the next day !

The reality is hand to hand combat one to one is nice to know, you are better off focusing on good firearms skills and having lots f ammo as you will need it in any urban area as few grapes will survive. When this is all over, there is going to be one man left for every seven women (God’s written word).

ISIS is nothing, wait until the locust army arrives full force in what is left of the USA. Hand to hand does not matter when there are multiple attackers with AK-47s and swords to take your head. imho of course.

Hey Paul, I’m pretty confident that it’s not in there. It might be some extra-Biblical text, but not in the Bible.

80% of urbanites will die in first 2 weeks of a catastophic event, they do not have skills or intelligence to survive, You can have the best plan and it will all go to hell in a hurry, too many unforseens to overcome. Wait till the freakin muslim masses come here like in europe, then you see panic…

Target Focus Training (TFT) is the continuing refinement of the SCARS protocol by Tim Larkin and a dedicated team of practitioners that he has drawn together. Tim started this refinement as a member of the US Navy in support of the SEAL community. (Tim was a BUDS honor grad but burst ear drums prevented him from earning his trident.)

I have attended the basic course 3 times, once in DC and twice in NYC. Each time I have seen the refinement in the application of the TFT theory (put your hard parts into your enemy’s injury {if you are not creating injury you are pissing in the wind} prone soft parts). In some cases it has been the elimination of a tool — don’t use a straight fist as chance of injury is significantly higher than using a hammer fist. This was a change between the first and second course I took. Additionally, the TFT team is always seeking to how to optimize their student’s time. The first course I took was a 2.5 day course, Friday-Sunday. The last class I took in NYC was a 1.75 day course starting Saturday and ending mid- afternoon Sunday. The difference was a tightened focus based on feed back from real world altercations from both civilians who defended themselves from predators on five different continents and military personnel in both the obvious theaters of combat, as well as, those spots that don’t hit the news.

In my opinion, there is no better protocol available for those who are committed to surviving the most critical 5 seconds of their lives. From my perspective, this is the 21st century’s follow on to Major Rex Applegate’s “Kill or Get Kill” the basis of my dad’s WWII USMC H2H combat training pieces of which he passed on to me.

I recommend Target Focus Training (TFT) without reservation. The live classes are worth every dollar spent. I have a number of TFT videos. They are superb! I offer one caution in their purchase. In my opinion, they serve as an excellent reinforcement to the live training but in no way replace it. If the DVD sets are the only way you have the opportunity to learn TFT, get them. You will need to diligently concentrate as you watch.

Understand this is for everyone mature enough to grasp the appropriate time to utilize deadly force. My first reaction partner was a 75 year old doctor who used a cane because his knees were not as good as they used to be. He was from TN and had a CCP. In other classes, my reaction partners have been high school and college age females as well as moms and grandmothers; males ranging from 18-75 years old; black belts and first timers to any H2H combatives; and those from 4’11” and 100lbs soaking wet to 6’5″ and 285+lbs. TFT live training is a wonderful present particularly for your daughter heading off to college or the work force.

May you be wise enough to place TFT in your quiver of options and may you be fortunate enough to never find yourself in a position where you need to use it.

I recommend the TFT materials. I have experience, consulted to NHL hockey players to prepare themselves for a scrap, and trained in many systems over thirty years and do know “enough to be dangerous” in a few.

From a short cuts and practical point of view, tft is valuable because it’s understandable, efficient, and is great for those without the time and money to invest playing catchup, or a desire to become a fighter (tft is not sport fight training).

To add my own 2 cents… the vital Principle to keep you alive is your mindset. Specifically, a shift from prey to Predator. It may sound like psychobabble, it is not. It’s commonly seen in many unsuccessful store robberies, watching smaller rodents defending their home against larger predators, and even school shootings are ended because someone went from prey to Predator (often with a gun, not always).

When your response is fueled by “How Dare You”, this indignation is the Mindset that will prove as valuable as any technique when survival is the context.
Over~Prepare, Go Offensive, Overwhelm with whatever you’ve ingrained.

Why is Glen Beck wearing the Seal Trident? If you didn’t earn it, don’t wear it!

Probably because Marcus Luttrell gave it to him. I don’t think there’s anyone who thinks that Glenn is trying to portray himself as a SEAL. If you are a SEAL, I’d contact Marcus and ask him.

Good article! As I was reading it, I was pretty sure that you were talking about TFT, until I came to the part where you said, “Violence is rarely the answer, but when it is, it’s the ONLY answer,” and then I was certain. I’ve watched many of their videos, trained with them live, and even done some follow-up training. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

I sometimes wonder if I will be able to apply the targeting skills in a life-threatening situation. Of even more concern is knowing when it is time to strike, to avoid seriously injuring someone when it is not necessary, but to avoid being the one injured by delaying when action is required. I sincerely hope to never find out the answers to those questions. I am glad to have those skills in my arsenal, particularly since the state of New Jersey will not allow us to defend ourselves with firearms. If gun-free zones are dangerous to law abiding citizens, then the entire state of New Jersey is a safe workplace environment for criminals.

Interesting to hear that you do some trail running, as I do a lot of that myself. David has said that it is something he enjoys as well.

      Yup. That’s the point 🙂 Here’s a few things to understand…

      1. Most people walking around who need/want protecting don’t know how to mentally “flip the switch” and instantly go from “church mode” to wolverine. You’ll learn how to do that.

      2. A lot of people have the attitude, but need help with targeting and optimizing their weight transfer during strikes. You’ll learn how to do that.

      3. Many people mistakenly believe that you want/need to get “amped up” and adrenalized when you flip the switch. The exact opposite is true. You want to be in “classical music” mode rather than “heavy metal” mode. You almost surely will release adrenaline, but you want to minimize the amount and length of time that you’re releasing it so that you stay in control and so that you don’t “drain the tank” too quickly. You’ll learn how to do this.

      4. Many people confuse stopping a threat with killing. Sometimes stopping the threat has the end result of killing the attacker, but that should never be the goal. People who have used this have repeatedly said that they caused their attacker to no longer be a threat with 1 or 2 strikes and that there was absolutely no need to strike again. They were able to do this because they had a clear outcome in mind in their subconscious before they started–stopping the threat. You’ll learn how to do this.
